PVD (physical vapor deposition) coating, also known as thin-film coating, is a process in which a solid material is vaporized in a vacuum and deposited onto the surface of a part.

Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) is a process to produce a metal vapor (titanium, chromium and aluminum) that can be deposited on electrically conductive materials as a thin highly adhered pure metal or alloy coating.

PVD, or physical vapor deposition, is a line-of-sight coating process which allows for thin coatings and sharp edges. CVD, on the other hand, stands for chemical vapor deposition and is thicker to protect against heat. PVD is typically applied to finishing tools, whereas CVD proves best for roughing.

The Advantages of PVD Coating

PVD coating processes deposit a layer of high density material that's only a few microns thick. Once applied, the coating is nearly impossible to remove, and won't wear off on its own.

Almost any material can be PVD coated, but the most typical examples are using the process for stainless steel or titanium. Other materials include: chrome plated brass and all other steels.
